I can confidently say that anyone needing customized pre-employment testing would benefit from a program designed by ErgoScience. When Total began expanding from a “no touch freight” customer base, adding on freight handling accounts and flatbed, we saw a significant increase in workers comp injuries and claims. We needed to find a provider that would be able to impartially evaluate our driver candidates, based on the varying requirements of their specific account. Ergo was able to create a customized test that replicated the needs for each type of account. This testing has helped Total prevent injuries and the costs associated with them, as well as reduce the amount of fraudulent workers comp claims due to pre-existing issues. On many occasions, their testers have brought medical concerns to our attention that we were unaware of, that could have potentially led to injury and the costs associated with them.

In 2012 we were searching for a tool that would test our driver recruit’s ability to perform the physical demands of a flatbed driver. Something that would help us make a better hiring decision. ErgoScience created a job demand analysis for us based on our equipment and work process. They also partnered with a local PT department who performs our weekly testing. Lineage has made significant strides in injury prevention through the implementation of a multi-faceted approach to safety at a few of our more physically demanding operations. ErgoScience’s Pre-Hire Physical Abilities Test was one of the first layers of a larger injury prevention program for a few of our locations to help drive safety and decrease injuries among new hires. The second layer added was Strongarm’s wearable ergonomic sensors. We also hired a full-time athletic trainer for one of our facilities. It’s the aggregate of these and other safety changes over time that have been part of the safety culture shift at these locations. While the story doesn’t clarify the individual contribution of each of these changes, all of the initiatives work together to drive safety metrics. Using these approaches, some of the facilities lowered their TIR (Total Incident Rate) by half. We feel that the combination of the safety culture shift, leadership buy-in, pre-hire physical abilities testing, wearable ergonomic sensors, and onsite early intervention can create a powerful change in injury prevention and employee engagement.
